Sabina Sams: Sharing music with others
Updated: Mar 24, 2019
Ever since she was in 5th grade, Sabina Sams knew she had a knack for singing and for music. Now, at 16 years old, she is one of the chorus managers for the Newport County Youth Chorus. As someone who relishes the idea of learning new music, and who believes that music and personal growth go hand-in-hand, Sabina is devoted to helping others learn new musical skills, too.
Learn about Sabina in this month’s NCYC team profile.
Sharing music with others
Sabina is not only a chorus manager for the NCYC, but she’s also the vice president of the Middletown High School chorus. These positions reflect her passion for both music and working with children.
“I love working with kids and I think it’s important to help them connect with music,” Sabina said.
Leadership has offered Sabina more than just an opportunity to teach and help others on their path, but also a way to understand herself and her own personal growth.
“Working with NCYC helps me know my strengths and weaknesses in working with different age groups,” Sabina said. “From the high school chorus down to work with younger students.”
Having a good time is important when you’re doing something you’re passionate about. Perhaps this is why Sabina takes so well to performance and leadership with NCYC. She encourages all children who are considering joining to know that NCYC is an amazing group that has a lot of fun during their rehearsal and performance time together. Her favorite NCYC song is “Vela Vela.”
Outside of chorus
In her spare time, Sabina can be found babysitting, and helping her family with household chores. Her favorite colors are green and blue, and she finds algebra comes easy for her, making it her favorite subject in school.
Music also infiltrates a wide swath of Sabina’s life outside of chorus. She participates in track, and often finds herself listening to music prior to meets as a way to calm her nerves. She said that music has benefited her entire team in this way, too.
“Music can really help anyone when they are going through something,” Sabina said.
Even if she’s not completely sure on what her future holds, it looks like she’ll be prepared for anything that comes her way. And through it all, she’ll have music to help her.
About NCYC
In the year since its September 2017 inception, the Newport County Youth Chorus has become an important extracurricular of students across Aquidneck Island. The chorus has given youth an opportunity to try different musical styles, as well as a chance to express themselves in a judgement-free zone.
Participants range in age from second to sixth grade. You don’t need any experience to join—just a passion for singing. Students learn to sing in different languages and styles, as well as how to read music and understand musical terms and notation. Come join us this year in this fun and engaging experience.
