About NCYC

History
The Newport County Youth Chorus was founded by Elizabeth Woodhouse, a music educator/ conductor with 18 years of experience working with young singers in community arts organizations across the country.
The program began in September 2017.
Program
The Newport County Youth Chorus is an after-school community chorus program for young singers in grades 2 through 8. There is no audition and no previous musical experience is necessary to participate—just a love of singing! The Newport County Youth Chorus programs empower kids to grow as musicians in a fun and safe environment.
Weekly rehearsals include vocal development that is appropriate to the singers’ age and ability, individual attention in small classes, and musicianship study (music reading and understanding). This occurs in the context of a diverse music selection (genre, languages, cultures, time periods, religions), and in an environment that values both teamwork as well as each individual’s unique contribution to our ensemble’s success.
Classes are offered weekly in Newport and Middletown; choose which day and location works best for you.

Prep Chorus is offered to 2nd - 4th graders in 6-week sessions with a musical theme (examples include “American Classics” and “Broadway Showtunes”). Each class is 60-minutes and the program culminates in a sharing for our family and friends at the final class. Additional performance opportunities are offered throughout the year. The program is free.
The Middle School Ensemble meets for 90-minutes once a week. Small classes ensure individualized attention and encouragement. Each semester culminates in a concert performance. Additional performance opportunities are offered throughout the year. The program is free.
